sweet 18!

Today is cousin Zoe's Birthday!!! Happy Birthday kiddo!

She was visiting us for her b-day last year and it was so much fun! We wish we could be with her today. We are sending you tons & tons of hugs though!

I'm a bit frustrated that I can't seem to get through to her on her mobile phone =( I'll keep trying though. We also waited until the last minute to send something to herso it won't get there until Thursday! Booo.

We are so excited for her that she's going to her Uni of choice in a couple weeks (eek!) and is starting her new life as a college (uni in the UK) student. So much fun. I can't wait tho hear tales.

Alex is off in the mountains backpacking but he is sending his thoughts too. We love ya Zoe! Have a great day & a fandabydozy year! =)

mini reviews

We've seen quite a few movies in the last few weeks, but I haven't written about any of them! So, here's a brief review about the latest viewings (in no particular order):

Step Brothers
Not very funny. I hated Taledega Nights (by all the same people) but I liked Anchorman and this sorta fell between the two. Not a huge Will Farrell fan so wasn't expecting much. Just failed on so many levels. But it was a crew screening (Alex worked on it) so the price was right.

Hancock
I actually liked this movie! By the time we saw it I had heard from so many people how bad it was that that's what I expected. But, It was a really fun ride. The camera work SUCKED though. Bummer. Afterward we started thinking about it & there is quite a bit to pull it apart but during the actual watching of it, I liked it.

Get Smart
Not funny =( For the first half an hour I was laughing really hard & wondered what people were talking about that didn't think it was good. Then, I found out. It just didn't hold up to the first part. I really wanted to like it, but couldn't. Then, Alex didn't get a credit on it(!!!) and he worked so hard on it, which so sucks. So that left a bad taste in our mouth.

Wanted
I really wanted to like this film. It's directed by a russian director that made a couple great films that we saw last year, Night Watch & Day Watch. So creative & spectacular & well acted. This one, not so much. It was full of action, and Angelina Jolie is good, but overall it just falls flat. A lot of potential but didn't quite get there.

The Dark Knight
Hmmmm. For the first half of the film we (the whole audience) were so enjoying this film it was great! And we saw it a week before it came out so we didn't have the general public's opinion to affect us. But then, in the 3rd quarter it just got repetitive. And I was a little bored. Then, the last quarter just sucked all around. Too much talking. Too long. Too many characters. Too much badly directed action. Bummer. I know there are a lot of people who "drank the coolaid" (I work with so many of them) that just thought it was perfect, but it wasn't. And It could have been awesome. I'm glad I saw it & I loved the first half.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Dreck. Pure crap. I don't really even have words for how awful this film is and what a waste of my life it was to spend the time to see. Wasn't worth the price of admission, and it was a screening, so it was free.

X-Files: I want to Believe
Fine. It was like a fine 2 hour episode of the tv show. But it felt a bit "past peak". I doubt these guys will be back again for another go round. Didn't hate it, but not quite sure why they made it or why they didn't bring something new to the party.

The Clone Wars
I didn't go in expecting to like this film at all. And, I was right. It's basically a "teaser" for the TV show coming next month but it's just very badly made. The animation is pretty bad and the writing is atrocious! It's supposed to take place between SW episodes 1&2 but even if you've seen those movies it was way confusing. Maybe it's because I've tried to purge two of the worst films in history from my brain so I don't remember them, but I think this film is just confusing anyway. You are never sure who is who. They have lame Yoda speak that isn't really how he talks at all. But what bothered me most of all is that it was more than 75% fighting and killing. If I had kids I wouldn't let them see this film. Or the tv show for that matter. Totally lame. On the good side, I liked the stylized character designs and the environments. Now, if they could just hire some decent writers (& animators & editors) and cut out some fighting/killing...

Space Chimps
Well, Alex and I both got a credit on it, so that's fun. We saw it 2 years to the week that we left Vancouver and working on it (A worked on it more later from LA). I was really expecting it to be horrible but it wasn't. It wasn't great but it wasn't painful. I think really little kids might like it. I didn't like the character designs, but I never did. And I think they missed an opportunity to create a totally new, cool world. It needed more time for story (as most non-pixar animated films do) but turned out fine.

So, I guess all in all, not a great month for the movies in my book. Boo. I can't wait to see something I really like with all my heart. The last film that did that was The fall a few months ago. I'd settle for just plain fun, like Iron Man. Ooh, I didn't write about that did I? Oh well. I really liked it (even though it fell apart in the 3rd act). A great ride! More like that please.

gettin better

Today Hannah has her second riding class. So it's her 4th time here. Today (so far) went a lot better than last time where the horse wasn't having a good day & it fell over too! I wish she could come more often. Every week even, but it turns out it's been a busy summer for her & her family. She's so cute & gets more confident every time. Now, if I could just get her to do english instead of western...

lunchables

Before Dad left town he came over to my office for lunch. Mel met us there too! It's kinda funny cause there are quite a few people at my office who want to meet Dad but every time he comes by no one is there! They are out that day or having a long birthday lunch or whatever. Oh well. Their loss :) It's fun to spend any time with him that I can.

missing the kid

It's been a year since cousin Zoe appeared on our door step for an all-too-short summer visit. I really can't believe it's been that long. Although, at the same time it feels ages (too long) since she left. We had so much fun! And although we were all working we did so much. The WB tour was one of my favorites, but Venice might have been the best. But then there was Santa Barbara, the Hollywood Bowl, the photography place, pirate adventure...!! My only question is... When is she coming back? We miss her!

prosperity!

Happy 08-08-08 08:08:08!
This only happens once a century & repeating numbers only happen once a year for the first 12 years of a century. Very cool. Why aren't we having a party? China is, with the olympics. 8 is a very good number there & is supposed to be lucky (it sounds the same as the word "prosper").
Man! I could've had a V8! :)

bright side

We went to see Eric Idle at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday night. It
was way fun and the best part was singing "always look on the bright
side of life". I'll see if I can upload a movie we took. What a hoot!

eclipse

There was a total solar eclipse today in the East. There are images all over the internet but here are some great ones on the HuffingtonPost.

There was a trip that took the trans-Siberian train across the continent & stopped in the middle to view the eclipse. Alex & I so wanted to go... sigh.

Enjoy!
